Women Lawyers Association

Malawi

Founded in 1993, the Women Lawyers Association (WLA) is a national women-led organization in Lilongwe that combines legal empowerment with grassroots interventions that prevent child marriage and support survivors. Their core work is concentrated in rural areas across several districts that have some of the highest rates of child marriage in Malawi.

With their Changemakers grant, WLA will implement more targeted interventions for girls in schools in areas that remain hotspots for child marriage in Malawi. They will also strengthen early-intervention efforts, broaden community engagement, and adopt a more comprehensive, sustained approach to keeping girls in school and safe from harmful practices.

FROM WOMEN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION

The Changemakers grant energizes our commitment and gives us renewed confidence in the impact we can achieve together. This partnership means increased resources and strengthened capacity for us to expand our work on ending child marriage and protecting girls’ rights. It also represents a valuable collaboration with a like-minded partner dedicated to uplifting girls and amplifying their voices.

The grant will enable us to hold school clinics to create safe spaces for girls to learn about their rights, the dangers of child marriage, and the importance of education. We will equip teachers, parents, and traditional leaders with tools to prevent child marriages and support the reintegration of survivors into schools and communities. We will also provide psychosocial support to help survivors heal, rebuild confidence, and pursue education or other opportunities for empowerment. Alongside these interventions, we will reinforce our legal aid and strategic litigation work to protect girls’ rights and ensure accountability for violations.

Our dream is a Malawi where child marriage is completely eliminated, and every girl is able to complete her education, thrive, and become an empowered and independent citizen contributing meaningfully to her community and country.
