Wangki Tangni Mairin Asla Takan Ta Upla

Nicaragua

Working in Nicaragua’s North Atlantic Coast, Wangki Tangni directly addresses the drivers of child, early, and forced marriages in remote Indigenous communities where climate change and economic hardship are fueling rising rates of early marriage. As a community-based, Indigenous women-led organization founded in 2003, Wangki Tangni is uniquely positioned to respond to the needs of Miskita girls and women, who are often isolated from public services and excluded from formal protections.

Wangki Tangni will invest in educational programs for children, adolescents, youth, and families that challenge patriarchy, promote healthy self-esteem, build life-skills, and educate community members on child marriage and its negative consequences.

FROM WANGKI TANGNI

For us, this is a huge commitment, as the work we plan to do is of great importance to us: helping young women who have many needs – not only material but also emotional. With the support of the Girls First Fund, we will be able to plant a seed of knowledge and support for the young women of Wangki, so that they can lead fulfilling lives and so that we can help combat the widespread violence young women face today.

We do a lot of support work. We visit communities, work with young women, and develop plans with women and young people in the communities. We have had to stop all this work due to a lack of resources, but with this grant, we will be able to continue this important commitment.

We continue to work so that girls can have a safe life, a life free from violence, a life that girls deserve, a life for young people as established by the laws and their rights, free from violence.
